The risks come from erroneous assumptions made when taking Survivor:

  • Thinking you can drink more than usual because you are taking Survivor. You should always take a responsible approach to drinking alcohol, and understand that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption
  • Using Survivor as an excuse to ignore the recommendations of professional medical and governmental bodies relating to alcohol consumption
  • Survivor must not be used as a replacement for any medication. Thinking Survivor is anything but a nutritional supplement and using it to attempt to treat underlying illness associated with alcohol consumption – or any other illness. You should always seek and follow professional medical advice relating to any health issues relating to alcohol consumption

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) in high concentrations has the effect of turning urine bright orange as it is naturally flushed out of the body.

Our dosage instructions recommend a maximum of ten capsules in a single 24 hour period, and as with many food supplements, there is a large safety threshold built into these guidelines. An overdose of vitamins A, D, E or K can cause serious or life-threatening side effects – however Survivor contains none of these ingredients.

It’s unlikely that an individual would develop dependence on a food supplement, however it is possible. This is universal to all food supplements and functional foods.

Yes, there are many nutritional benefits to taking Survivor. Survivor is a nutritional supplement formulation containing a blend of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes with extensive nutritional benefits.

Our formulation is designed to be used when drinking alcohol, so the majority of our ingredients are there to support functions which are relevant to alcohol consumption. For example the body rapidly depletes its reserves of many B vitamins when blood alcohol levels increase as the body attempts to process the latter. Our formulation contains a broad spectrum of B vitamins to help redress this imbalance.

For maximum effect, take Survivor whilst drinking, and before going to bed. We recommend taking two capsules for every four drinks consumed, followed by two capsules before going to bed. Do not exceed 10 capsules over a 24 hour period. And please, drink responsibly.

As a company, we currently have no scientific evidence to support this. We would never advocate using Survivor to support increased alcohol consumption and Survivor should never be used in an attempt to ‘sober up’, e.g. before driving.

Academically, it is interesting to read some of the studies performed on our herbal extract ingredients. For instance, some studies suggest that Puerariae lobatae flos enhances the body’s ability to break down ethanol, while Dihydromyricetin has been proposed as a ‘novel anti-alcohol intoxication medication’ as it ‘…counteracted acute alcohol (EtOH) intoxication.’

DHM is a potent flavonoid also known as Ampelopsin which may help accelerate your body’s ability to break down acetaldehyde, the toxic product of alcohol metabolisation.

Studies suggest DHM relieves alcohol toxicity and prevents intoxication by curtailing the absorption of alcohol in the gastrointestinal tract and promoting alcohol metabolisation in the liver – it has even been proposed as a ‘novel anti-intoxication medication’, which serves as evidence of its potential.

Though it can be extracted from other sources as well, such as the Oriental Raisin Tree (Hovenia Dulcis), ours is extracted from the Vine Tree (Ampelopsis grossedentata – it’s no coincidence DHM is also called Ampelopsin) at 98% purity. In traditional Chinese medicine, the flower of Pueraria lobata (Puerariae lobata flos) has been used in therapy to counteract problems associated with alcohol consumption and liver injury.

 Interestingly, the root of the same plant (commonly known as Kudzu root), has the opposite application as the flower. Kudzu root is used as a traditional medicine against alcoholism, through aversion therapy. Unlike the flower, the root is thought to block the breakdown of acetaldehyde, the toxic byproduct of ethanol, making consumers feel worse, and as a result, cut down on alcohol consumption. ‘Pueraria flos, which enhances acetaldehyde removal, is the traditional hangover remedy. Conversely, Pueraria lobata is a known inhibitor of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) and increases acetaldehyde.’ (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17980785)

 Though Kudzu as a genus is commonly known for the invasive weed known as ‘Japanese Arrowroot’, ours is a very specific one: Pueraria lobata. We have this specially grown for us, and the flowers are hand-clipped, and then carefully extracted to a 10:1 ratio.

Taurine has been much maligned in its associations with energy drinks. Quite on the contrary, Taurine is a pseudo-amino acid shown to have a calming effect and increase sleep quality as well as a range of hepatoprotective (liver) benefits, which make it a very valuable addition to Survivor. And don’t worry – contrary to popular knowledge it is not extracted from bull semen – it is fully synthesised and vegetarian-friendly.

Milk Thistle ExtractSilybum marianum has been used as a traditional supplement to protect the liver. Its main active ingredient, silymarin, is a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Some early research suggests milk thistle may aid people with alcohol-related liver disease.

5-HTP – 5-Hydroxytryptophan is an amino acid produced naturally by your body, which uses it to produce serotonin. Low serotonin levels are associated with depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, weight gain and other health problems. We extract our 5-HTP from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia plant.

Magnesium (Magnesium oxide) – depleted through alcohol consumption, Magnesium plays a large part in energy metabolisation, good sleep, and muscle relaxation, as well as supporting the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which breaks down acetaldehyde into acetate. Magnesium is required in the body for over 300 enzyme systems, which regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production, metabolism, and is important to nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm.

L-Theanine – an amino-acid that occurs naturally in green tea, among others. Research suggests that L-theanine might provide a range of health benefits, which may include improved mental focus and better sleep quality.

Vitamin C – studies have suggested that Vitamin C accelerates the metabolisation of ethanol and acetaldehyde, and reduce some of their adverse effects.

Chromium – dietary chromium is typically considered essential to the body, playing a role in the metabolism of nutrients through its impact on the hormone insulin. Survivor uses the most bioavailable form of chromium (Chromium picolinate).

We have successfully sourced a vegan capsule supplier for future production, making Survivor both vegetarian and vegan friendly.

 

Each Survivor package successfully protects the capsules within from UV exposure and the elements, however keep in a cool and dry environment. It is shelf life stable, and will last at least two years. See the back of your Survivor package for the precise ‘Best Before’ date.

Post crowdfunding, Survivor will be on sale online globally via our website (survivorlife.com). We are also in discussion regarding distribution deals with retail/grocery and licensed on-trade establishments. It’s important Survivor be available at the point of alcohol consumption, given our product is designed to be used in that context.

There is no cure for a hangover, aside from not drinking at all. Survivor will not help with symptoms associated with sleep deprivation and will have less of an effect where the alcoholic drinks consumed contain larger quantities of congeners such as red wine, whiskey and tequila.

We do not advocate the use of Survivor as a product to specifically reduce blood alcohol levels. You should take all normal precautions with, or exclude from participating in, any activities where performance may be impaired by consumption of alcohol. And please, never drink and drive.

The first instinct was one of desperation out of personally experiencing from the impact of alcohol in the university and work scene. However, it came more properly from recognising that there seemed to be a significant gap in the market for a nutritional supplement formulation specifically designed to be taken during and immediately after alcohol consumption.

From idea to execution, took about 18 months. We initially started with a soft drink formulation, but quickly realised the limitations of this format stood in the way of both the price point and convenience our customers were looking for. Survivor in its current form, came to life during the second half of 2018.

The reason Survivor exists is to provide nutritional supplementation to individuals who choose to consume alcohol and wish to take a nutritional supplement at the same time as they are drinking.

Much of the research and development work we intend to undertake in the future will be focussed on the potential role of nutrition to mitigate the harmful effects of alcohol consumption. This is an area we plan to explore in great depth subject to both successful commercial operations and through attracting external investment.
